Red diesel is a reduced/low duty fuel and is also subject to a lower 5% VAT rate unless over 2300 litres is delivered in any single delivery, then it must revert back to 20% VAT. The fuel is marked with a chemical marker red dye allowing Customs and Excise to identify when and where red diesel has been used, and also to trace the origins of supply. The rules surrounding using red diesel have now changed, with many sectors losing their entitlement from 1 April 2022. Please note – it’s illegal to use red diesel in road-going vehicles.
